Vizio XVT472SV Review
Though Vizio often advertises itself as America's TV company, the TVs are actually made in China as anyone can see by looking at the serial tag plate on the back of the TV.The new XVT472SV series (not to be confused with the SV472XVT, what's up with the confusing model numbers?) from Vizio has the latest and greatest that promises to keep Vizio competing with the Tier 1 manufacturers. This series has LED local dimming backlighting, a 240Hz refresh rate (listed as 480Hz but that is back light manipulated spec), and a new black drive system. This is the top end feature and price offering from Vizio for 2010/2011.
Test and Optimum Viewing Distance: 11 feet
Calibration: There are low barrier governors on the Vizio XVT series so it's important to properly calibrate this TV to avoid light bleed, color shift and other irregularities. Dont push the contrast and brightness to far. For full post calibration picture settings please see the XVT472SV calibration page.
HQV Processor Testing: Overall testing of the XVT472SV processors was very positive. Blurred edges were apparent in many of the test objects and this problem carried through to video content as well. We were most impressed with the HD Stadium seating test for which this TV registered the best result we have ever seen. There was no moire' pattern in the seating and panning side to side was extremely smooth.
480i Video Content (cable, DVD): Picture quality from 480i and similar resolution appeared soft and blurry around the edges as did all content on this HDTV. HQV processor testing yielded very good results for the XVT series indicating an excellent internal chip set. There was no banding or mapping apparent. There was judder and jerkiness in many scenes both in 480i and HD from side to side panning as we were forced to turn off the Smooth Motion 240/480Hz rate feature due to unwelcome background information.
Vizio XVT472SV Review
The XVT472 did a good job with this brightly lit scene from the 480i version of Sphere
HD Picture Quality: The two problems that we had with viewing content from HD sources was 1) the picture presentation was overly dark (post calibration), causing dark areas in dark scenes to run to black with no definition and 2) image edges were continually blurry which surprised us considering the inbuilt processors. This occurred no matter what back light setting we used. As mentioned above, judder and jerky side to side panning were problems when turning off the Smooth Motion feature but worth it in general. See below 240Hz rate feature evaluation. The LED backlighting occasionally introduced some negative effects by reducing shadow detail in the top corners of some scenes.
Vizio XVT472SV Review
This shot from the HD Blu Ray version of the Road Warrior show how the edges can get a little blurry on the XVT472SV
Vizio XVT472SV Review
In a brightly lit scene from the same movie the blurred effect largely disappears
Black Level/Contrast Ratio: Black levels appear saturated though not deep. They take on a dark charcoal appearance at times.
Vizio XVT472SV Review
Blacks appear slightly washed out in this scene from the 480i version of Sphere
Dark Shadow Detail: This is perhaps the toughest issue for the XVT472SV as it struggles to maintain detail in dark scenes from a post calibrated picture setting – especially in the top left and right corners of the screen.
Vizio XVT472SV Review
Shadow detail in dark scenes suffers greatly with the backlight set to what should be an adequate 40 percent. Above a night scene from the Road Warrier
Color Rendition/Color Accuracy: We did not note oversaturation of color information after proper calibration. However, color shift will occur in this TV at higher contrast and brightness settings. Keep them reasonable.
Viewing Angle/Off Axis Viewing: We almost always find that viewing angle is better on local dimming LED back lit LCDs than any other form of LCD. The XVT472SV is no exception. Contrast does not degrade significantly at angles and begins to shift at about 30 degrees. Though not as good as plasma TVs in this category, the XVT472SV has closed the gap some.
LED Back Light Evaluation: The Vizio XVT472SV has local dimming controlled LED back lighting which can be a feature enhancement. When testing with a static lit gray screen there was obvious displayed lighting irregularities around the side edges of the screen in a rounded arc formation. Back lighting seemed more concentrated to the center of the screen. As a result, content scenes when there was dark material in the top corners of the display, shadow detail suffered. Overall brightness from the LED back lighting seems plenty sufficient, however color shift will occur when turning it up over 45%.
Motion Blur: We did not note any motion blur with the Smooth Motion 240Hz feature turned on. There was jerky motion effects when turning it off. See below a review of this feature.
False Contouring/ Mapping: Due to excellent internal processor chip set there was no mapping, grouping, banding or the like apparent in either HQV testing or video material.
Features: As mentioned above use the Smooth Motion feature on Low but do not use the Cinemotion feature in conjunction unless you want to add lots of jerkiness and a nasty background effect to the picture.
240/480HzHz Rate Feature Evaluation: Vizio calls their back light manipulated 240Hz rate feature Smooth Motion. They claim that manipulation of the LED local dimming backlight increases the spec to 480Hz. It's of no matter. As with most LED/LCD TVs, there are unintended adverse consequences of this feature which eliminates natural background blur during scenes with motion. Sony, Sharp and Toshiba models are the exceptions. The unwelcome effect typically occurs when the scene is changing from static calm to side to side motion. It can be most distracting and we recommend turning the feature off for film based content and using it on the Low to setting for sports and other fast motion programming. Unfortunately, when turning the feature off judder and jerkiness when panning side to side will be apparent.
To access the Smooth Motion setting:
Click on Menu and scroll down
click on Advanced Video scroll down
click on Smooth Motion
Keep on Low to Off setting.
Video Aspect Ratio Sizing: Zoom 1 &2, 4:3, Panoramic, Stretch Mode. 1:85:1 DVD source material will use Stretch mode which did a reasonable job of interpolating.
Inputs: 4 HDMI inputs (1 on the side), RGB PC input, 2 Component, USB port, lacking Ethernet port.
Aesthetic Considerations: Though the XVT472SV is a hefty 4.5" deep it does at least have nice thin bezel framing at only an inch around the screen. The finish is gloss black and there is a metallic silver accent under the Vizio logo. The included gloss black table stand does not swivel side to side.
Vizio XVT472SV Review
The XVT472SV is a hefty 4.5" deep but has a nice thin gloss black frame.
Remote Control/Menu Funtionality: The top buttons on the non-backlit remote control are inexcusably small. Though the remote looks small and sharp, it will be very difficult to use this remote control in a dark room. Remember, form follows function. P.input button scrolls through input options if you can find the button. The menu system is plenty adequate and the accompanying manual is very informative, though it is not available through the TV's menu.
Vizio XVT472SV Review
Buttons on the top of the remote are too small.
Audio Output: Sound volume output from the 15W X 15W speakers was impressive as was the virtual surround effects and definition (listed as 15W in manual, some sources say 10W). It's nice to see a manufacturer not over look speaker quality as it is so important for those that do not choose to implement their own surround sound system.
Internet Options: The XVT472SV does not contain Internet options. The SV472XVT does have Internet options.

Sony NSX-24GT1 Internet TV with Google TV

Sony NSX-24GT1 Features Review

Sony's Internet TV allows you to watch TV, use Andriod Apps and Surf the Web all at the same time from the comfort of your living room sofa. The NSX series adds plenty of internet functionality to the proven Bravia LED TV platform.
Most internet connected TVs give you access to a few apps or games as well as streaming content but don't have web search or browsing built into the TV. Sony's Internet TVs are powered by Google TV and use the Andriod platform with the Chrome browser built in and an Intel Atom processor. The models feature Sony’s premium streaming service "Video On Demand powered by Qriocity" as well as pre-installed apps including CNBC, Napster, NBA, Netflix streaming movies and TV shows, Pandora internet radio, Twitter, and YouTube.
The remote features a full QWERTY keyboard for easy text entry as well as an optical mouse for easy access to web pages and the interface. Sony's Internet TV operating system can download upgrades automatically so the TV can stay current long into the future. Built-in WiFi makes connecting this TV to your home network simple and painless.
These Sony Internet TVs are the most advanced internet connected TVs we have seen yet, combining the power of Google TV and full web search/surfing capability into a sleek, well designed package.

Review Toshiba 46SL417U

Description: 46" Full HD LED backlit LCD TV 1080p resolution
Includes: Tablet Top Stand, Built in Wifi, component and composite breakout cables
Dimensions: 42.46" X 28.59 X 1
Reviewer: Regarslow
Date: Summer 2011

Picture Quality Rating (HD): 8/10

The Toshiba SL417 comes preset out of the box to the energy saving AutoView picture mode. It's really a pretty good setting especially compared to the preset mode on most TVs, however some of the extra picture features that it uses such as the Dynalight feature can be distracting. The AutoView mode does exactly what it says, it finds a good picture setting for you based on room light (from a starting point of course). Use our calibrated picture settings (next page) to reduce light fluctuation and improve dark shadow detail.

A good shot from the Blu Ray of 300 shows good black levels and contrast on the Toshiba SL417. The HD picture quality is very vibrant.
After calibrating the TV close to D6500K we played various movies that we like to test with as well as some You Tube and Netflix content. Color information from the SL417 is very good. They are realistic, vibrant, and rich. Blacks and contrast are good too. The Sports picture mode will really make sports programming pop if you want to amp it up. That's the only programming for which I would change our settings.
Toshiba claimed to have come out with a new processor for their TVs called Cinespeed and we can confirm that it works. During processor testing (results next page) the Toshiba SL417 registered excellent results, the best we've seen on several tests including the most difficult film resolution loss test. The superb processor translates into little to no motion lag, moire' patterns, color mapping, and especially annoying flicker with moving patterns. Eliminating these faults helps picture quality tremendously. On the negative side of picture quality, side angle viewing contrast degrades rapidly at 20 degrees and severely (30%).

Picture Quality Rating (Non-HD): 7.5/10

A crisp, colorful shot from the DVD of Kill Bill shows how well the SL417 can upconvert lower resolution signals..
The Toshiba's processor did a great job of upconverting lower end signals to its full 1080p resolution. It especially shines when vertical pattern information is displayed such as ties, or blinds. Color output was just as good as with HD programming. What the SL417 does not overcome are two of the most common issues with LED backed LCD TVs – 1) weak side viewing angles, and 2) backlight screen uniformity. We've mentioned the first, with uniformity when we increased the Brightness controls slightly to help dark shadow detail we could more easily see backlight uniformity issues especially near the left and right edges of the screen.

Another shot from the same movie shows background light uniformity issues at the edges of the screen (with Brightness control turned up).

Contast levels decrease at around 20 degrees off center pretty significantly as evidenced by these two shots from Oceans 12. The first shot is taken from front and center while the second is from a side angle of 20 degrees.

Features Rating: 8/10

Features: This TV has 120Hz enabled frame rate conversion called Clear Frame. It's not nearly as intrusive as most of these dejudder technologies, however we still recommend turning it off. The TVs processor does a good enough job eliminating judder not to use it.

The Internet Options Menu on the SL417
Internet Options: Toshiba is a little behind in the Internet TV options department, but has the ones you will need most. The Yahoo! Widgets options which publishes the news, financials and a few other services. We're still not a big fan. The SL417 also has Netflix, Vudu Movies, Cinema Now, Pandora, Facebook, Flickr, You Tube.

Vudu Movies is one of the choices (via subscription) on the SL417
Wireless Connectivity: It's present, built in, and works very well on the SL417. The fact that the Wifi is built in is a plus, since most TV manufacturers are producing an optional Wifi dongle.
Other new features include DynaLight LED backlight technology which automatically adjusts the backlight on the LCD depending on room light conditions. This energy saving feature could save you a few bucks a year, but we found the occasional flicker from the backlight distracting.
Video Aspect Ratio Sizing: The diminutive Pic Size key at the bottom of the remote controls the TVs aspect ratio options. The Full option will cover most of your needs.
Inputs: 4 HDMI, 2 Component (through included breakout cables), 1 Composite (through included breakout cable), PC 15 pin D-sub, 2 USB, LAN, Coaxial composite.
Aesthetic Appearance and Design: The SL417 is no slouch in the looks department with a slim 1" black medium gloss bezel framing and a clear glass finish on the top of the heavy well built table stand. The included stand also swivels to about 20 degrees. The depth of the TV is a super sleek 1" by our measurements. Input receptacles are well positioned to allow for super tight wall mounting (thus the included breakout cables).

The SL417 has a very complete but non-backlit remote control
Remote Control/Menu Funtionality: The non-backlit remote is attractive and fairly user friendly. The input key is a little hidden. It has ample buttons for controlling both the TV and all the Internet features with special keys for Netflix, Yahoo! Widgets, and Net TV. One special note: To change the picture or sound settings while watching Internet TV features, use the Quick key rather than the Menu key as the latter does not work for Internet options. You'll want to adjust these picture settings as well to our calibrations.
The arching half wheel menu system is easy enough to understand and I guess a little cool. Calibration options are very complete though the TV only has a 2 point white balance control. Picture mode options are complete with the aforementioned Autoview, Sports, PC, Game, Standard, Movie 1, and Movie 2. A unique Theaterlock option locks settings in place, so the kids cant accidentally change them on you.
Audio Output: These super thin TVs are rough on the speaker quality. Imagine how small they must be to fit into that housing. The volume control was slow responding at times. It's difficult to get comfortable with the sound whether using in the increased volume from the Dynamic Volume Control or turning it off. Sound quality is tinny and high-pitched. Voice is audible though and there is an optional voice enhancement control which we normally suggested using.

Sony Bravia XBR-60LX900 3D Capable 1080p 240Hz LED TV

  Overview Specifications

SONY XBR-60LX900 Features Review

LX series: This is an edge lit LED backlit LCD with avant garde technological bells and whistles such as a sensor technology that "sees" you and adjusts picture brightness depending upon whether or not you are watching the TV. Turn your head down to look at your iphone and the picture dims, theoretically saving you a little on your energy bills and extending the life of the LED backlighting. Your television is watching you - literally with its built in camera. The speaker also has an auto adjustment through the sensor technology. Additionally there is a Child warning feature if your child is sitting too close to the TV. Overkill? The TV enjoys the new monolithic design which allow a small backward slant to make up for low height TV furniture such as BDI or Bell'O Getti.
Sony's 3D capable Bravia XBR line for 2010 is the LX900 series of LED edge lit LCD TVs. The 1080p panel features Sony's MotionFlow 240Hz to reduce motion lag and image doubling in 3D as well as the Bravia Engine 3 video processor reduces noise, enhances detail and optimizes contrast for a vibrant, lifelike image.
The XBR-LX900 series features Sony's new Opticontrast panel that ses both a surface treatment and a sheet of resin between the LCD panel and the glass to reduce reflections and refraction of internal and external light to provide excellent black levels even in a bright room.
Built-in WiFi provides access to Sony's Bravia Internet Video service, this feature gives consumers access to streaming video from Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand, YouTube, NPR, Sony Pcitures, Sony Music and more. Bravia Internet Widgets gives instant access to up to the minute news, weather, sports scores, stock quotes and more. Bravia Sync communicates with other Bravia Sync equipped devices for an intergrated home entertainment experience.
The innovative feature called Intelligent Presence Sensor uses face detection to see if you've walked away from the TV or are not watching th screen and will automatically dim the backlight to conserve energy, if you are away for an extended period it can even tun the TV off. Additionally the Intelligent Presence Sensor cn detect your viewing position to deliver optimized picture and sound balance based on your angle and distance to the TV.
All of these features are wrapped in Sony's stylish new "Monolithic Design" that combines fashion and function for a TV that looks impressive both on and off.

Toshiba 65TL515 Review

65" 1080p 120Hz LCD/LED TV with NET TV and WiFi

When I viewed the 2D to 3D picture performance demonstration I was not too impressed by the 3D imagery, but this was the case with almost all manufacturers with this technology. I believe input picture from camcorders and video recording devices is actually better without the 3D conversion at this point in the technology cycle. There is a lack of depth in the 3D converted images.

Picture and Viewing Features

Toshiba TL515Adoption of the Toshiba 65TL515 will be interesting as the TV has lots of compelling features but in Toshiba's passive 3D format and edge lit local dimming. Viewing angles on the TL515 are superior to that of the SL417 due no doubt to the enhanced local dimming technology employed during viewing.
When I viewed the 2D to 3D picture performance demonstration I was not too impressed by the 3D imagery, but this was the case with almost all manufacturers with this technology. I believe input picture from camcorders and video recording devices is actually better without the 3D conversion at this point in the technology cycle.

Appearance

Aesthetic specifications for the 65TL515 are completely different that Toshiba's other TV offferings with a larger 1.5” width framing bezel in a brushed matte metallic black with a slight texture and a chrome acrylic edge. The TV has very sharp lines and is extremely expensive looking. I'm particularly fond of the matte metallic textured black finish. The panel depth is amazingly only about an inch.

Internet Applications and Connectivity

Toshiba NET TVThere is full wireless capability included on the 65TL515 to enable the NET TV option – Toshiba's full Internet TV suite. Aside from the premium Internet TV Apps like Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, and Hulu – Toshiba's Internet TV option largely relies on a partnership with Yahoo! Widgets which are fast improving due to an open source solution which allows software developers to introduce different Apps constantly, much the same as most of the other manufacturers except through Yahoo!. This open source application is opening up many new creative and relevant applications that these streamlined Internet Apps for TVs needed. We had the chance to interview Yahoo! About what recent Apps are interesting and the company cited a You Tube full screen App, a calculator widget, and an App for Smart Phones to use keyboard search (as a browser).

Standout Features

The TL515 has a fast speed upgraded processor termed Cinespeed which is less than 6 milliseconds in response time. It upgrades the Hz rate feature to 240Hz to eliminate more camera and fast action judder.
One of the key feature upgrades is the natural passive 3D technology which allows use with the inexpensive passive 3D glasses ($5 to $10 per pair). There is much less flicker from passive glasses, however you will only see 540 lines of resolution per eye – not full 1080p 3D viewing.
In addition to being 3D enabled, the 65TL515 has 2D to 3D conversion technology (Toshiba calls it Trivector) built in

Connections

The TL515 is Toshiba's entry level into 3D and since it is not full active 3D, the price point is more attractive. It is particularly geared toward gamers and families wanting more pairs of glasses and less complication.

Sharp LCD TV

LCD TV Buying Guide Commentary

The LE925 contains all the features of the LE920 series but adds 3D capability and is the only 3D TV we know that includes 2 pairs of glasses. 3D glasses can be as high as $200 so it's nice to see an extra pair included for family or guests.
The flagship Aquos LE925 series features Sharp's groundbreaking Four Primary Color technology. Normally the primary colors on a TV screen are red, green and blue. This new Aquos LED TV adds yellow as a primary color enhancing the picture with more than a trillion available colors. Sharp says that this allows the LE925 to display all the colors the unaided human eye can see including colors that LCD televisions have not done well in the past such as the golden yellow of brass musical instruments. The new X-Gen 1080p panel uses UV2A technology to be more energy effecient than typical CFL backlit LCD panels.
Aesthetically the new full panel front glass extends to the very slim bezel to give the LE925 a modern, contemporary look that will complement any TV room. Aquomotion 240Hz processing contends with motion blur and a complete array of inputs including 4 HDMI, 1080p component, PC and USB input let you watch from a variety of sources.
Aquos Net adds internet connectivity through the built in ethernet jack, Netflix streaming video will be available as well as online content from other providers.

Samsung UN65D8000 65" 1080p 3D LCD/LED TV

For 2011 Samsung ups the ante in TVs again, their UN series LED TVs were immensely popular in 2011 and each one we reviewed was impressive in picture quality, appearance, feature set and overall quality. Replacing last year's C8000 series are the D8000 series and they are slimmer, lighter, better looking and loaded with even more features. It doesn't look like Samsung will be losing the TV crown in 2011.

Picture and Viewing Features

The UN65D8000 uses a 1080p, 240Hz LCD panel with LED edge lighting, the edge lighting is capable of local dimming for increased contrast in dark scenes and better contrast than LED or LCD televisions with constant back lighting. For the new D8000 work has been done to reduce cross-talk during 3D programming and to smooth out any uneven lighting commonly found in edge lit TVs.
These Samsung LED panels can get very bright and they produce rich, saturated color. Sometimes the colors can appear oversaturuated but many viewers like that look and broadcast and cable networks comply by oversaturating their content. On the D8000 this makes color leap off the screen, very powerful but not as realistic as some might like. The color can of course be dialed back using Samsung's excellent picture controls.
The D8000 sees 2D to 3D conversion return, we were not wholly impressed by this feature last year but content shot in 2D will never have the pop of content shot with a 3D camera, however it would be nice to see improvement in this feature.

Appearance

The UN65D8000 looks good... really, really good. The single pane of glass goes all the way to the edge and is surrounded by a .2" chrome strip. The whole TV is around a half an inch deep and just looks impressive no matter what angle you are looking at it. All of Samsung's LED TVs for 2011 are showpieces for any living room.

Internet Applications and Connectivity

High end Samsung TVs will include their new "Smart Hub" in 2011, this divdes the connected features of the TV into 4 categories:
  • Samsung Apps: Samsung was the first to offer an HDTV app store similar to the ones you find on today's smartphones. There is plenty of free content like YouTube, Pandora, streaming media and social media content and there is also premium content that varies in price but is for the most part cheap.
  • Web Browser: Smart Hub equipped televisions come with a full web browser. Surf the internet without getting up from the sofa and getting your laptap.
  • Your Video: Based on what content you watch this area of the Smart Hub will suggest content you may enjoy based on your viewing habits.
  • Search All: Search your TV, any DLNA connected devices and even networked PCs all at the same time. Quickly find the content you are looking for

Standout Features

The physical appearance of the UN65D8000 is the feature you will notice first, the glass that stretches all the the way to the slender chrome frame and the .5" depth are striking.
Bright, colorful LED backlit LCD panel has excellent black levels thanks to local dimming
Expanded Internet Features give you more to watch, all the time and the included web browser and WiFi are standouts amongst those.

Connections

The D8000 has plenty of connection options, plenty of HDMI 1.4 inputs, analog component and composite video and for the first time Samsung is including built in WiFi in a television.

Sony KDL-22BX320 Review 22" Bravia LCD TV

Picture and Viewing Feaures

I'm not usually a huge fan of 720P televisions these days. It's not actually because of their lack of the full HD1080p specification, it's because the manufacturers often do not put enough processing power in them to enable excellent video quality. In other words, they arent putting their best chip sets in their lowest priced TVs. Luckily for the BX320 it doesnt much matter since the TV is only available in 32" and 22" sizes. At smaller size picture flaws are much less noticeable.
Good ole LCD TV screens are becoming a little scarce these days much to the detriment of the value oriented consumer. LED backlit LCDs command a much higher price in the marketplace. They capture the eye in the stores when consumers first see them, and the colors can be very vibrant when contrast is turned up. Most of all this progress though in LED TVs is just to catch up with good ole plasma technology in black levels and side angle viewing. LCD TVs are like California wine – even the lower priced value oriented LCD TVs arent bad. The KDL-22BX320 is not going to blow your socks off, but the picture quality is fine for most purposes. You will sacrifice a little in the black level depth, the processing speed and see some motion artifacts and judder present. But really what an improvement over just two years ago. Flourescent is not a nasty word in my dictionary.
In case my points not clear, the 22BX320 is a traditional CCFL (flourescent) LCD TV.
Full contrast side angle viewing is limited to about 25 degrees off center. There is some jerky, judder effects during slow side to side panning. Otherwise, the picture clarity is good with defined edges. The TV is easy to calibrate with customizable picture settings.
The inbuilt processing is not great. There are visible motion artifacts with many incoming signals.
Higher end features that the BX320 is lacking are the Sony MotionFlow Hz rate feature, The new X-Reality processing engine, LED backlighting.
Colors are not oversaturated and look natural in the BX320 which is one of its strong suits.

Appearance

The value oriented 22BX320 is not trying to blow you away with its looks. Like last years EX400 series LED, it is pretty sharp looking until you get up close and notice some of the more "plastic" feaures (both figurative and literal.) If having the hottest looking, thinnest depth metallic chrome bezel framing is important to you, this is not your TV.

Internet Applications and Connectivity

None available in the BX320

Standout Features

Value Oriented 720p CCFL backlit LCD TV for the budget minded.
USB input for photos, music, or video playback
Ambient light sensor can reduce contrast automatically (we usually do not recommend this feature)

Connections

3 or more HDMI inputs should be plenty on any TV. 1 rear ethernet port, 1 side USB port, 2 rear Component video inputs, and 1 RF.

Value

In the smaller sizes 22" to 32", we completely understand going for a value orientation for that extra bedroom TV or kitchen TV. Many of the benefits of LED backlighting will be lost in smaller sized TVs.

Sony KDL-55EX620 Review

Description: 55" LED backlit LCD TV, 120Hz, Internet Options
Power Consumption: 166W
This review also applies to models: EX621

by Robert Wiley

Strengths:

  • Aesthetic Design Appeal
  • 1.62" Deep
  • Deep Black Levels
  • Hardwire or Wifi Capable for Internet
  • Full Internet Browser for Search
  • Clean detailed image edges
  • 120Hz Motionflow
  • Strong Input selection
  • Internet options

Weaknesses:

  • Cinemotion removes natural background blur
  • Bravia 3 Video processor testing not positive
  • Side Angle viewing limited
  • Irregular screen uniformity introduced by LED backlighting
  • Motion judder and blur in fast motion and panning scenes
  • Poor Audio quality and volume
  • Remote Control not backlit
  • No Picture Menu adjustment for Internet Programming
One growing picture trait of the Sony LED TVs that sets it apart from the competition is the colors are not oversaturated. In fact, for an edge lit LED backlit LCD TV they are somewhat subdued. I like the color accuracy emphasis of the newer Sony TV genre and that's also true of this edge lit LED Sony KDL-55EX620 a direct replacement for the EX600 that we reviewed last fall.

The EX620 produces realistic and vibrant images from brightly lit scenes such as this one from the Blu Ray of Oceans Twelve.

Picture Quality Rating (HD): 7/10

We have discovered that we much prefer clear coat screens over their filtered anti-glare screen counterparts. The latter come with a few too many issues. One such is weak side viewing contrast which the EX620 suffers from. Another is lack of dark shadow detail in areas where there is glare. Another is weak dark shadow detail in dark scenes when there is light in the room. Even though this EX620 produces excellent black levels in suction cup calibration readings, it doesn't appear that way to the naked eye when there is room light. So much for high technology.

Picture Quality Rating (Non-HD): 7/10

The picture is much the same with Standard definition programming though I was impressed with the way the EX620 displayed some poorer 480i content through its composite input. This is counter to our processor testing results, but the eyeball is always the best judge. We did note a lot of motion lag in fast moving images and judder around image edges when scenes pan from side to side. Black levels remain inky with standard def content. As with HD, well lit brighter movies look good on this TV while darker ones fare a bit worse.

This standard definition shot from Charlies Angels (from Internet Video service Crackle) shows good flesh tones and definition but a little dimming around top corners of the picture.

Features Rating: 7/10

The Bravia Internet Video home page.
Internet Options: Sony's improving Internet Suite includes Netflix, Crackle, Qriocity, Pandora, Hulu Plus, and You Tube among many others. We rate the Internet Suite on the EX620 as average.

Value Rating: 7.5/10

The Sony KDL-55EX620 is a mid range Sony offering for 2011. At around $1899 we believe this TV will come down in price slightly through the year. It delivers a few extra features over the econo-models such as thin depth, a complete Internet suite, 120Hz, good black levels, and great design and appearance. It has its negatives as well as discussed above. Competition is from Samsung with the UN55D6300, the Panasonic TC-P55GT30 plasma TV, and the Sharp LC-60LE732U.
